MAGNETISM IN GEMSTONES.
There are occasions in testing gemstones when the oddest and most unconventional tests can prove highly useful. One such test is for magnetism in gemstones, and it is one which powerful small modern magnets and the coming of the 'aperiodic' type of balance makes it easy to apply on a semi-quantitative basis.
The garnets happen to be a group of gemstones which chow magne-tism to to a considerable extent, and in testing for inclusion in the present chapter. Iron is by far the most strikingly magnetic of the elements, and on the whole it is gemstones containing considerable amounts of iron which are attracted by a
magnet. But the author found that the presence of manganese also gave rise to a surprisingly strong pull when app-roached by a magnet.
