Ultrasonic cleaning is now extensively used in the jewellery trade and is extremely effective when applied to mettle work. there are a number of gemstones, however, in which the high-frequency vibration is extremely damaging, especially when the mineral concerned has a ready cleavage. the attractive new 'tanzanite' variety of zoisite may be mentioned as a particular example, but to be on the safe side any gem-stones should be removed from their 

setting to avoid subjecting them to an ultrasonic ordeal.

It is largely to prevent stones under examination from being solied by handling that dealers use tongs (tweezers) of one sort or another. the choice of tongs (tweezers) ('corn-tongs' as they are sometimes called) is very important, as many one sees are too finely pointed or too strongly 

sprung. for general usefulness, tongs about 5 or 6 in. in length, made of stainless steel, with rather blunt, rounded tips, scored inside to prevent the stone slipping, and with a mild spring, are ideal, tongs with a 'slide' which enable the grip on a stone to be maintained without continued external pressure can also be obtained, and are useful when a stone is to be handed from one person to another or titled in different orientations under the microscope - but they are heavier,

clumsier, and more expensive then the simple type. the author must confess that, after 45 years of stones handling, he still finds tongs difficult to manage. it is only needs a little too firm a grip and the stone to be ever so slightly on the tilt for it to spring  suddenly away to some awkward and often unknown destinations.
