Wooden masks depicting humans or animals are commonly found in West Africa. Originally ceremonial masks were used for celebrations, initiations and in preparation for war. The masks would be worn vertically to cover the face, on top of the head as helmets, or placed as a crest resting on the head, and covered in material, to form a disguise. The mask ceremony has a dancer apparently in a trance, communicating with his ancestors.
Most African masks are made of wood, and some are decorated with ivory, semi-precious stones, animal hair and plant fibers.
