A part form 'hamatine' imitation of haematite , only one gemstone responds with sufficient strength to the pull of a stong pocket magnet as to be actually picked up when the latter is applied to it , and that is the type of diopsside showing a four-rayed star . In this presentlly rather popular material the asterism is caused by inclusion of magnetite needles, and it is these that account for the strong reaction to a magnet. However, a cabochon of almandine balanced on its back on a polished surface will 'swivel'
